THE CAPTURED PERSEVERANCE

Design week Milan 2018
In my last grade of school I’ve been to Milan for the design week. With this furniture I stood on the design week. The furniture had to be based on refugees and easy-to-use products. It was a big experience to experience.

Furniture             : High closet
Dimensions         : Height 1830 mm, width 800 mm, depth 350 mm
Material              : Wooden shelfs (pallet/winebox), grate, steel

Wooden shelfs (pallet/winebox)
The used old pallets are relatively cheap and recycled within this design. Besides that it looks rough and it perfectly fits the theme ‘REFUGEE’.

The grate
The reason for using a grate in my design, is because a lot of refugees feel captured or are kept in prison. When you look on the internet for ‘refugee’, you will find a lot of pictures like this …

Steel
The legs of the closet should be the finishing touch. I choose this material to  create a perfect fit with  he rough looks of the wood, in combination with the grate. For the adult I used concrete iron with 20 mm diameter, for the child 6 mm.

”THE CAPTURED PERSEVERANCE”

The Captured Perseverance refers to the refugees in the world, who constantly have to move on in bad and dangerous conditions. Despite the fact that they have to deal with their tough existence, they keep the faith for a better life!

Life kan be hard, with a lot of pressure on your shoulders. That’s what I want to show with the construction of the legs. It suggests a parent with his child – they carry this burden with perseverance.

I use the word ‘captured’ because refugees are captured behind the grate. But do they feel free without the grate? Are they still scared?

As a small detail, I created a little fellow as a handle on the grate. As a captured refugee he can see the whole content of the closet and perhaps the rest of the world. But will he ever be able to reach for it?

SOME ELEMENTS OF THE DESIGN METHOD

VINO GIRATORIO

EXAM ASSIGNMENT
I made “Vino Giratorio” for my last assignment at school. This was from January 2018 till June 2018. After that i got my diploma. “Vino Giratorio” stands for rotating wine in spanish. My mom and dad needed a new side table and this is what came out. It’s made of oak, broken mirror pieces, a pair of stainless steel tubes, an old motorcycle chain from a Harley Davidson, ball-bearing, an old hand wheele of a lathe, a pulley and epoxy.

HVA

PROJECT SEATING ELEMENT WITH A BUILDING INSTRUCTION
I made this furniture in my third grade (2017). Based on a beach/party tent in El Arenal, called Heeren van Amstel (HVA). It’s made of walnut, a rope and a pair of stainless steel tubes.

COAT RACK

PROJECT SECOND LIFE

SOFA

PROJECT FUNITURE IN MOTION
I made this furniture in my third grade (2017) with a classmate who also had a very creative mind. That’s why we did a long time about create the design. Next to that he was very good in drawing with markers. That’s what I learned from him. When you sit on the sofa it feels softer than you might think. This is due to the foam under the oak blocks. It’s made of oak, veneered MDF boards (walnut), stainless steel tubes and foam.

TV CABINET

PROJECT ALLROUND OFFICE
I made this furniture in my second grade (2016) with a classmate who was very experienced in the machine field. Without him I couldn’t make this in my second year. Learned a lot from him. We had to work with round shapes.  It’s made of walnut, (blending) plywood covered with HPL, stainless steel tubes and plexiglass.

ACCESSORIES

TO TURN AND VENEER

In my second grade at school (2016) I made these two products. I had to work with veneer and a lathe. For the lathe I used a piece of wood from an acacia tree. For veneering I have used all kinds of different veneer and the border is made of oak.

NOT JUST A BORING BAG

It’s not as simple as it looks like. I made the bag with 13 different colours. So I made a board where all the rolls could stand up. It is all stitched at once. I used a large curved needle for the bag. Besides that, the leather is waste from the leather of a bank. (otherwise it would be thrown away)

COASTERS

Made with epoxy, stones, leaves and marbles.

MACK AND LILLY

Mack and Milly are just a little project I once made, but they are lovely to watch to.
